Possible Negative Changes Coming to Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard

This is a quick post with heads up. I don’t want to spread panic, and this may turn out to be nothing, but… Application for Arrival Plus is gone from Barclaycard website, and you can see more details on DoC Last time this happened, there were negative changes introduced, like 5% rebate on points instead of 10%. I don’t know if anything similar will happen this time around, so your guess is as good as mine. Will the sign-up bonus be reduced? Once again, I have no clue.

It’s possible it’s just a fluke and they are doing some maintenance on the website. If you have been thinking about applying for this card, the offer is still available through my affiliate network. That means if you apply through my site, I’ll be able to make a commission. This is what shows up as of now, and the application loads without any issues, though it’s possible that it will be pulled later in the day:

  • Earn 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days — that’s enough to redeem for a $400 travel statement credit
  • Earn 2X miles on all purchases
  • Get 5% miles back to use toward your next redemption, every time you redeem
  • Chip card technology, so paying for your purchases is more secure at chip-card terminals in the U.S. and abroad
  • No foreign transaction fees on anything you buy while in another country
  • 0% introductory APR for 12 months for each Balance Transfer made within 45 days of account opening. After that, a variable APR will apply, currently 16.24% or 20.24%, depending on your creditworthiness.
  • Complimentary online FICO® Credit Score access for Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers

If this card wasn’t on your radar, then no reason to hurry now because this may turn out to be nothing. If you were planning on applying anyway, please, consider supporting the site. 1. It’s interesting…the page appears on the Barclaycard site, but it says “Check back later to apply”.

Personally speaking, after you get the signup bonus on the Arrival+, I think you should drop it for the standard Arrival when the AF comes due. The standard no-fee Arrival is a pretty strong card for international travel – no foreign transaction fees, chip & pin, same rewards structure i.e. redeem 2500 points for $25 on travel-related purchase, but on the earning side you only get 2x for travel/dining and 1x for everything else (the Arrival+ gives 2x on everything…but you pay $89 AF for that privilege).

    • Erik, I agree 100% that this card is only good for the sign-up bonus. Unless you spend a ton, and I do mean a ton each year, I can’t see how it’s worth keeping past the first year. I actually plan on canceling mine rather than converting to no-fee version. I hope to get Jet Blue card at some point, and don’t want to be denied due to having too much credit limit with Barclays.
Oh, and minimum travel redemption is now 10,000 points on Arrival Plus, a negative development, for sure. I wonder what changes are in store?

  2. What’s really interesting is that the 10K minimum does not apply to the regular Arrival. From the My Benefits page: “Redeem your miles for travel statement credits, starting at 2,500 miles for $25 toward all or a portion of your qualifying travel purchase of $25 or more made within the last 120 days. Every time you redeem you will also earn 5% of your miles back, to use toward your next redemption.” I did not downgrade, I actually applied for the Arrival straight-up (per the recommendation of the agent!) to get the 20K signup bonus before I cancelled my Arrival+.

    • @Erik That is interesting and thanks a lot for pointing out this peculiarity. I meant to check on it but got busy. It’s strange that the two cards have different travel redemption terms. Maybe a good strategy for me would be to downgrade then. The bonus is a bit low on regular Arrival, plus I don’t think Barclays would give me another card.
